Spain Attempts to Halt Imports of Olive Oil

Spain is attempting to block plans that would permit outside countries to import olive oil into Europe.
Britain, Sweden and the Czech Republic are keen supporters of the plan as they felt it would help to reduce the rising costs of olive oil. Prices have risen recently mainly due to last year's drought and the effect it had on the olive harvest.
Officials in Spain disagree and say the price of olive oil has dropped by 20% in the last week. Spain produces nearly half the olive oil purchased in EU countries.
